As a field supervisor, you know that site-specific hazard assessments can actually prevent incidents--if done well. Here are some tips you can use to reinvigorate your site-specific hazard assessments.
1. Don’t conduct assessments from the truck. Do actually get out and, as a crew, physically inspect the site for hazards. Even if you’ve been at that site all week. You never know what may have changed, or what was overlooked before.
2. When someone observes a hazard, stop. Point at it, and say out loud what the hazard is. Ensure everyone sees the hazard. Then note it on your hazard assessment form.
3. As a crew, brainstorm potential hazards that you didn’t see. Include hazards that could arise. Note hazards that, from your collective experience, could exist.
